Nigerian Red Cross signs MoU with UNHCR on Disaster Management

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on disaster management and civil unrest in Nigeria.

The MoU establishes collaboration between NRCS and UNHCR in the preparedness and response to humanitarian crises resulting from conflict, civil unrest and population movement.

The MoU reads in part, “NRCS and UNHCR will seek to work on early response interventions to the incidence of conflicts and other situations arising from Internal Displacement; we will reach out to provide timely support for meeting humanitarian needs for Refugees and IDPs”

The NRCS Secretary General, Bello Hamman Diram noted that “the NRCS and UNHCR, have complementary resources, skills and approaches which need to be harnessed to mitigate the impact of conflicts and other emergencies on Refugees and IDPs”
Diram said he strongly believes that neither UNHCR alone nor the NRCS can succeed individually compared to the synergy of the two working together.

The country Representative of UNHCR, Nigeria, Gogo Hukportie, explained that the purpose of the MoU is to ensure that the two organizations work together in response to the incidence of conflict in Nigeria.

She further stated that her organization will go further to ensure that “the institutions work together to prepare, agree on joint assessments, reporting and response on the incidence of conflict situations, implement and monitor to alleviate the suffering faced by casualties.
